"This was worse than Tropical Storm Allison"

Flooding_crescentpark

Almost a foot of rain fell in West Houston overnight. This was the fourth heavy rain event to swamp our area in the last two weeks!

Once again, the storms developed and stalled allowing torrential rain to fall for several hours. 6-11" of rain fell over a large part of West Houston, from the West Loop and West Belt, to Katy, Cypress, Tomball, Spring and neighborhoods in-between.

The map below shows the estimated rainfall from Doppler radar over the last two days.

During our continuous live coverage Tuesday morning, some folks living in West Houston said the rain was heavier in this storm than it was during Tropical Storm Allison. And indeed it was.... in that area where only 3-6" of rain fell during the storm in 2001.

Some additional heavy thundershowers could develop overnight and early Wednesday. Although we are keeping a slight chance of rain in our forecast through the end of the week, the overall weather pattern should shift most of the widespread heavy rain northward, away from Houston. There's nothing to dry us out. So if showers do develop they could be heavy.

Let's not dwell on the negatives of natures wrath in Houston. Floods are a part of Houston and builds characters out of all of us. Here are the top ten reasons why I love Houston floods:

1) Very reliable traffic lights still works under 10 feet of water in case you are boating on the freeway.
2) Good reason for being late to work even though your area is not flooded.
3) Driving over pools of water is a good way to wash your truck tires.
4) Gives you a chance to test if you car is submersible like in that James Bond movie.
5) You look very intelligent because you bought an inflatable boat 10 years ago which you have not ever used.
6) You don't need to water your lawn for days.
7) Gives you a chance to stand around and socialize with strangers and talk about the weather and your house being in the middle of a lake.
8) That very attractive weather forecaster stayed on TV for quite a while.
9) Brings excitement to your neighborhood and gives you a chance to be on the news.
10) Lots of time to think about a top 10 about something.

I was horrified to see the Beltway 8 and I-10 interchange and the water that was there.. it was so deep and frightening! This angers me and many others because of all the money, time, and wasted efforts made to make this thoroughfare a reliable way to move through the west side.
This was dangerous in the first few hours and remains so... what did they do with the engineering that would make this a death trap? Who is responsible and why wasn't it done right the first time. I am just a frustrated taxpayer who sees all these construction sites daily and can't imagine this was done so poorly as seen by all on TV today.
