Snow blankets southeast Texas

Kids of all ages got to play in the snow Wednesday night! What started off as a few flurries grew into a genuine snowstorm by evening. Low pressure in the upper atmosphere lifted moisture across the area which worked with cold air aloft to create the wintry precipitation. Just as the low pressure reached Houston, it strengthened causing the snowfall to intensify.

Here are some preliminary snowfall amounts from the National Weather Service:

  • Pasadena: 2.5"
  • Channelview: 2.5"
  • League City: 1.5"
  • Conroe: 1.2"
  • Kingwood: 1.0"
  • Clear Lake: 1.0"
  • Brenham: 1.0"
  • Liberty: 1.0"
  • Pearland: .50"

You can view photos of the snow taken by ABC13 viewers on our website.

Is there a connection between Wednesday's snowstorm and Hurricane Ike?  During the winter of 1983, following Hurricane Alicia, it snowed several times.  Hurricane Jerry made landfall here in 1989 and it snowed the following December as well.  Do the weather patterns that steer hurricanes toward southeast Texas also bring cold air and moisture together to create snow during the winter?

The last widespread measurable snowfall here was on Christmas 2004. While many of us enjoyed a White Christmas that year, that probably won't happen this year despite Wednesday's little snowstorm. The weather patterns do not favor another chance of snow between now and Christmas Day.

I loved the snow but I want it to snow again so bad. And before Christmas too. Anyone have any info on a good chance of us getting some more snow again like on the 10th? I sure hope so!

Regarding 2004, it might be worth keeping in mind that leap years, presidential elections and summer olympics always coincide, so this 'strange' things is on the schedule every 4 years... Sorry for stating the obvious :)

Someone

You know when it snowed in 2004 we've had a:

-leap year
-a Summer Olympics in Athens
-a Presidential election with Bush as the victor

in 2008 we've also had a:

-leap year
-a Summer Olympics in Beijing
-a Presidential election with Obama as the victor

Even though this may sound off the wall and most likely may now have anything to do with each other...don't you think it's kinda odd that we get snow whenever those 3 events occur? Just a thought here you could say.

Natalie

MAKE IT SNOW AGAIN TIM! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!
You can do that, right?! :)

How does this explain the snowfall in 2004? Without that piece of information it sounds like a pattern...but with it, it sounds like a coincidence given that we didn't have a hurricane make landfall in 2004. Rita didn't come until 2005.

I live in Hankamer, TX just off I-10 about 50 miles east of Houston. As of 7:00 am we received aprox 4 inches of snow if not more!!!! WOW! I haven't seen this much snow in these parts on over 30 yrs just after Hurricane Alicia! Go Figure!
