Record cold tonight

Temperatures could drop to record lows overnight!

If we hit 39° or lower at Bush Intercontinental Airport we'll tie the old record set in 1910...and it will be the coldest night of the season, so far.

Fcst_lows_10282008Temperatures will be at or below freezing north of Houston, around Conroe, Lake Livingston, Lufkin and Jasper. A Freeze Warning is in effect for these areas. This won't be a hard freeze; your pipes will be OK.

Although the air temperature will stay above freezing in Houston, there could be some scattered frost on the ground when you wake up Wednesday morning.

This cold snap is a little early. Based on past data, we usually don't drop to 40° or colder until mid to late November. Here's the data from the last ten years:

  • 2007 November 16: 39°
  • 2006 November 16: 39°
  • 2005 November 16: 40°
  • 2004 November 25: 40°
  • 2003 November 24: 35°
  • 2002 November 17: 40°
  • 2001 November 21: 35°
  • 2000 November 9: 38°
  • 1999 October 25: 40°
  • 1998 December 12: 40°

High pressure is sitting over east Texas which allow maximum cooling tonight. The clear sky, light winds and very dry air allows the atmosphere to cool very quickly once the sun goes down.

A southeast wind will start to blow on Wednesday afternoon, so it shouldn't be as cold the rest of the week.
